Where they ever alive in Europe?

I’m still amazed brands like Lexus, Cadillac, Subaru and Honda are still in business in Europe. Has any of them offered a single competitive car in a mainstream (/high volume luxury) segment in the last 10 years ? Cars like the S2000, type R and BRZ don’t count as they are low volume niche cars .

I mean, the q30 and qx30......just look at it....

The q50 looks rather nice, but sales of those werent anything to write home about either.

The Civic wagon was pretty good, but too expensive to make it a good  competitor for the Megane/Focus/308. And then they killed it and replaced it by the US style sedan and hatch...

Without fleet sales and some soft-roaders, I don’t believe they’d still be alive in NA either.

The same is true of Nissan in general, except adding subprime buyers ...

Turns out we’ve had Infiniti in Europe since 2008, I didn’t think it was that long. Infiniti always seemed too American, looked like odd Mazdas and knowing they came from Nissan, people just thought, ‘I’ll buy a Nissan, I don’t know these people. I’ll let others take the hit and see how they fair’.

We had the made in Britain Qashqai,

Kinja'd!!!

The now French (I believe) but previous British built Micra

(new French built one),

Kinja'd!!!

Cheaper cars, we knew and pretty much made for us.

Exactly. I’m not arguing they never built good cars, but to be competitive you need to offer what consumers want for a decent price.

They didn’t sell cars , they only offered cars . That’s the problem.

I can recall seeing a handful, but it’s a case of oh look, there’s an Infiniti.

Subaru and Honda carved out a niche of very loyal customers , but both seem to have lost their way. I guess Honda sells a lot of Jazz models, but their main competition is a free bus pass, so those buyers don’t replace them every 3 years. The same goes for the buyers of non sporty Subarus. The customers have an old Legacy, probably filled with dog hair and wellies, and there’s no reason for them to replace it. Not that the current range is offering much.

Most of the Q 50s here for sale are the diesel. A couple of V6s, but AWD only. Interior looks a bit mid 2000's Lexus for a car released in 2013 .

The Q 30/QX30 are just a mess.

Regarding Lexus, if you look at it another way, they were farther ahead of the market than they had to be.

Up until the past 3ish years, the market was for diesel saloons and wagons with decent handling, which Lexus didn’t have much of.

Post-Dieselgate, the market has been shifting towards crossovers of every size, less ephasis on hnadling, as well as to partial (and full) electrification . Lexus h as a full lineup of crossovers,  each with a hybrid model, but they don't have the right image to generate sales.

You’re not wrong. The market is moving towards what Lexus has been offering forever; wallowing luxurious boats. Sadly for Lexus  offering the right products at the wrong time isn’t a commercially lucrative tactic.
